Dive Brief:
- After its debut in Bozeman, Montana, last May, Field & Stream Lodge Co. — the hospitality platform founded by Starwood Capital Group and AJ Capital Partners — is expanding with new hotels in Bend, Oregon, and California’s Big Bear, according to a Wednesday news release.
- Both slated to open in 2028, the forthcoming properties include a 151-room basecamp in Oregon, which will be a transformation of the former Shilo Inn, and a 148-room property along Village Road in Southern California, following a renovation of the former Holiday Inn Resort Big Bear, per the release.
- Field & Stream Lodge Co. selected the Bend and Big Bear locations for their similarities to Bozeman, said Scott Ebbott, principal at AJ Capital. “[These] are towns built around getting outside with true, year-round adventure in every direction,” he said in a statement. “We're seeing outdoor recreation continuing to pull more travelers out of cities and into towns like this.”
Dive Insight:
With plans to expand to more locations nationally, Field & Stream Lodge Co.’s hotels “are rooted in place, and created for outdoor travel seekers of every kind, including families, first-timers, seasoned adventurers, and everyone in between,” Ebbott said.
Each location is also meant to embrace the eponymous Field & Stream media brand, paired with local tributes to its surroundings, per the release.
Situated along the Deschutes River, which is known for its steelhead fishing, the Oregon lodge will offer guests access to year-round skiing, mountain biking and climbing, per the release.
The property is also less than 2 miles from downtown Bend, home to outdoor lifestyle brands and craft breweries as well as near the last remaining Blockbuster store in the world, a nostalgic relic that attracts thousands of tourists annually.
Meanwhile, the Big Bear hotel will feature a restaurant, meeting space, suites, and an outdoor pool and hot tub. Located two hours outside of Los Angeles, the property is a 10-minute walk from the 3,000-acre Big Bear Lake, per the release. Winters provide visitors access to 680 acres of ski terrain, while the summers bring boating, water spots, mountain biking and nearby hiking trails.
Field & Stream Lodge Co.’s expansion comes as hospitality players bet on outdoor-centric accommodations to meet traveler demand for unique, nature-focused experiences. In late July, Marriott International added the Reset Hotel near Joshua Tree National Park in California to its Outdoor Collection by Marriott Bonvoy, which launched in 2025 and is anchored by the Trailborn and Postcard Cabins brands.
Hilton has also been growing in the outdoor hospitality space through its partnership with AutoCamp. Earlier this year, BWH Hotels launched a collection of glamping retreats.
Hotel companies are also capitalizing on the winter skiing market, such as Hilton with the recently opened Canopy Deer Valley in Park City, Utah.
