Dive Brief:
- Marriott International and Another Star, the hotel management company that owns and operates the CitizenM portfolio, are opening a CitizenM hotel in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood, Marriott announced Tuesday.
- The third brand property to open in the city, CitizenM Washington, D.C. Georgetown offers 230 design-forward hotel rooms as well as “stylish” amenities, such as a shared “living room” space, the brand’s signature canteenM 24-hour snack shop, a gym and local artwork, according to the news release.
- The property marks the first CitizenM hotel to open under Marriott’s system after the company acquired the lifestyle brand last year for $355 million. Marriott plans to expand CitizenM’s footprint while preserving the brand’s unique character, Marriott’s former CFO Leeny Oberg told Hotel Dive at the time of the acquisition.
Dive Insight:
The new hotel aligns with Marriott’s strategy to provide “new and unique ways for guests to experience everything CitizenM has to offer,” Satya Anand, group president for the U.S., Canada and the Caribbean and Latin America at Marriott, said in a statement. The opening “is an especially exciting milestone” that marks Marriott’s continued momentum in North America, he added.
Designed by CitizenM’s longtime architecture partner, Concrete Amsterdam, the hotel blends “vibrant hospitality with smart, modern design,” per the release.
The guest rooms, in particular, were designed to maximize efficiency and comfort with extra large king-size wall-to-wall beds with luxury bedding, a rain shower and a 4K widescreen TV with streaming options. Guests can fully control the room’s ambiance, including the TV, blinds, temperature and light colors, with an in-room iPad.
Similar to Marriott’s Moxy brand, CitizenM prides itself on guest rooms that are boldly designed but smaller in size. The brands complement, rather than cannibalize, one another in Marriott’s portfolio, as “Moxy’s focus is a bit more playful, while CitizenM leans into its tech-savvy experience with a real focus on design and styling,” Oberg, who retired in March after more than two decades at Marriott, previously said.
The CitizenM Washington, D.C. Georgetown will offer both travelers and locals “a dynamic destination to eat, sleep, work, and play,” per the release. The property is within walking distance of Georgetown University, catering to campus visitors.
Netherlands-based CitizenM has two other locations in Washington, D.C., in the NoMa neighborhood and near the U.S. Capitol. Nationwide, CitizenM has hotels in Austin, Texas; Menlo Park, California; New York City; San Francisco; and Seattle. The brand’s entire portfolio spans 37 hotels across 10 countries, primarily in urban destinations.
At the time of Marriott’s acquisition, CitizenM had three under-construction hotels slated to open in 2026. A Marriott spokesperson told Hotel Dive that CitizenM London Olympia will open in later this month, with the brand focused on U.S. growth in “convenient locations in primary and larger secondary markets.”
