Dive Insight:
The hotel, a restoration of the historic Hill House Inn, features expansive grounds and what Trailborn claims are the largest indoor event venues in Mendocino.
“We’re excited to bring new life to these historic properties and to be part of the Mendocino community,” Mike Weiss, co-founder and co-CEO of Trailborn Hotels & Resorts, said in a statement. “Our approach is centered on preserving what makes this place meaningful, celebrating its history, honoring the landscape and creating experiences that feel true to Mendocino.”
On-site amenities include Hill House Wine & Grocer, walking paths, picnic areas and a restaurant serving pizza, cocktails and dessert. The hotel will also offer recreational excursions, including kayaking, winery tours and horseback riding, as well as wellness programming, including yoga, forest bathing and a sound and movement studio.
Located within driving distance from San Francisco, Sacramento and other parts of Northern California, Mendocino “has long been a beloved escape for city dwellers” searching for a serene retreat, per the release. In addition to being known for its coastal bluffs and New England-style architecture, the town has also been the filming location for a handful of movies and television shows, according to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation.
Trailborn’s second property in Mendocino, The Mendocino Hotel, is set to open early next year. It will include 20 rooms and 25 suites, as well as a restaurant called Moonwave, a restored historic lobby bar, a market, a parlor and a library.
In late 2024, Trailborn joined Marriott International’s system through a long-term agreement. The brand anchors Marriott’s newly launched Outdoor Collection alongside the Postcard Cabins brand.
Just last month, Trailborn appointed Paul Eckert as its new chief operating officer. Eckert will oversee the Mendocino openings as well as a forthcoming Jackson Hole, Wyoming, location, the brand’s first ski resort and four-seasons mountain destination, set to open this summer.
Trailborn’s growth also coincides with other hospitality players expanding in the outdoor accommodations space, as travelers increasingly seek experiences in nature.
