Hyatt’s Thompson Miami Beach was slated to open next month, reestablishing the luxury Thompson Hotels brand in the Florida city. However, just weeks before its debut, those plans were scrapped.
Hyatt confirmed to Hotel Dive Tuesday that, effective Oct. 3, Thompson Miami Beach will no longer be affiliated with the Thompson Hotels brand or Hyatt. The hotel, designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti, was set to open at 17th Street and Washington Avenue on Oct. 1, Travel Weekly reported in July.
A Hyatt spokesperson told Hotel Dive that the company does not have information regarding the property’s future, including whether or when the hotel will open or its brand affiliation. Hyatt did not identify the hotel’s current owner.
The property, while not yet opened, had been accepting bookings. As a result of the brand termination, though, future reservations will not be honored, and confirmed reservations will be cancelled at no penalty, the Hyatt spokesperson said.
“We are working with the owner to support guests with future reservations and a small number of hotel colleagues,” the Hyatt spokesperson said, declining to share how many hotel workers will be impacted by the brand termination.
The hotel’s planned opening would have brought the Thompson Hotels brand back to Miami. Hyatt acquired the former Thompson Miami Beach hotel along Collins Avenue in 2016 and rebranded it to The Confidante as part of its Unbound Collection. Last year, Hyatt again rebranded that hotel to Andaz Miami Beach.
The brand termination of the forthcoming Thompson Miami Beach comes after Thompson Hollywood joined Marriott’s Autograph Collection as The Hollywood Grande last month.
Despite these brand losses, the Hyatt spokesperson said Thompson Hotels remains positioned for “continued, long-term growth” because of its “storied history, strong brand equity, and loyal customer base.”
The company rep declined to comment on the brand’s future in Miami, specifically, but said that “Hyatt’s newly formed Lifestyle Group continues to develop high-quality Thompson Hotels properties in the right locations in the right markets with the right owners.”
Hyatt opened Thompson Houston in Texas last year.
