Canary Technologies has acquired mobile key provider OpenKey to build upon its existing digital hotel room platform, according to a news release. Terms of the deal, which was finalized in January, per a Canary spokesperson, were undisclosed.
This move expands Canary’s coverage to include additional door lock models and manufacturers, as well as widens its user base to encompass more global hoteliers.
With OpenKey, San Francisco-based Canary will “help hoteliers meet guest's rising expectations for mobile-first guest room access,” said Canary Co-Founder and CEO Harman Singh Narula in a statement. “Together, we're accelerating the transition to frictionless arrivals and a delightful hotel stay with our extensive solution set.”
Canary’s AI-powered guest management system includes mobile check-in, guest messaging, digital tipping and dynamic upsells. The software firm has supported more than 20,000 hotels across over 100 countries, including partnerships with BWH Hotels, Four Seasons, Marriott International, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Choice Hotels International, according to the release.
Founded in 2014, Dallas-based OpenKey enables fully remote check-in and integrates with hotel-specific apps. "We've long admired Canary's innovation and leadership in the hotel technology industry," said OpenKey CEO Stephen Bodnar in a statement. "We're excited to come together to enable even more hotels to deliver a seamless, end-to-end digital guest journey experience."
The news comes after a major investment round for Canary in 2025. In June, the company raised $80 million in Series D funding to help fuel global expansion and broaden its AI capabilities. At the time, this funding brought Canary’s valuation to about $600 million.
More and more hotel companies are embracing artificial intelligence to position themselves for the future and further personalize the guest experience. Experts predict agentic commerce will play a front-and-center role in 2026 in reshaping the hotel booking experience.
